Historical Origins

Howlite, a mineral found exclusively in North America, boasts recent recognition for its healing properties. In contrast to ancient lapidaries, this white stone is featured in contemporary sources. Its journey to prominence began in 1868 when Canadian gypsum miners encountered it in Nova Scotia, initially dismissing it as a hindrance. Henry How, a mineralogist linked to the Nova Scotia Museum, identified it as a new mineral, dubbing it "silico-boro-calcite." Subsequently, James Dwight Dana, How's student, renamed it Howlite in his honor after How's passing.

Buyer Beware!

Caution tape

Howlite's chameleon-like abilities enable it to imitate the appearance of other precious minerals, like turquoise. Howlite readily absorbs dye well due to the porous nature of the stone, making it almost impossible to tell from pictures alone. People often dye Howlite and try to pass it off as "Turquoise," even though real Turquoise is expensive and never white. If you're uncertain, you can do a simple test. Try to scratch the stone with something like a nail; if it leaves a mark, it's likely Howlite. Be vigilant against false labels to ensure you're getting the real deal.

Howlite, a member of the Borate mineral family, features Boron and Oxygen. Despite the rarity of most of the 230 Borate minerals, Howlite stands as a more common presence, found in abundant deposits. These minerals find their main utility in industrial applications, particularly in stain-removal products like laundry detergents and household cleaners. Howlite's distinct appearance presents as opaque white or light gray, graced with dark veining in black, gray, or dark brown shades. While not ideal for faceting, it thrives when sculpted into captivating forms such as globes, eggs, skulls, or cabochons.

White Howlite can be found in the Canada (Nova Scotia) and the United States.
